6 Tips to beat the heat this summer

The summer heat has arrived and like most truck drivers, you may be struggling with keeping things cool in the truck. Apart from the best air conditioning system, we asked a few drivers for some tips on ways to help stay cool during these summer months. This is what they said…

1. Small Fan – This was consistently mentioned by our trucker community as one of the first things to put in your truck during the summer. In fact, many drivers have found they enjoy it year-round. Travel centers hold a variety of 12-Volt fans that mount easily and provide instant relief for drivers. Click here for a look at RoadPro’s 12-Volt fan selection.

2. Beverages – Staying hydrated during the summer is incredibly important. We know drivers want to minimize stopping, so carrying additional beverages on the truck is crucial. According to Platinum Drivers, Inc., “in general, the goal is to drink up to 8 glasses of water per day in order to stay well hydrated”. This may seem like a lot but shooting to meet this goal daily will ensure hydration and is also good for your overall health.

3. Fruits & Veggies – If drinking 8 glasses of water a day sounds challenging, there are other ways to get your water intake. Approximately “20% of our daily H2O intake comes from solid foods, especially fruits and vegetables”, according to Health.com. Storing summer fruits and veggies, such as cucumber, celery, tomatoes, green peppers and watermelon, on your truck can actually help keep you hydrated. Rinse them off and keep them in baggies for easy snacking while on the road.

4. Cooler - If you don’t have a refrigerator in your truck, you may want to consider purchasing a cooler to keep your drinks and perishables cold. Otherwise you’ll end up with warm beverages and spoiled fruit… You may be surprised at the cooler options you will find at travel centers, often on sale around this time of year. The 18-quart Koolatron is a trucker favorite, because of its ability to fit between the front seat and be easily opened with one hand. For a list of RoadPro Cooler options click here.

5. Koozie – This is a simple item to keep in your cup holder that will help keep your drinks cool and the condensation off your hands. This is most needed when you are out of your truck with the air off, so your beverage has a chance to remain cool during that time. There are a variety of shapes/sizes for water bottles, cans, etc.

6. Stainless Steel Bottles – If it’s too hot for the Koozie, stainless steel is the way to go. Black Canyon Outfitters is releasing a line of drinkware perfect for drivers at a reasonable price point. The double wall vacuum insulation will keep your drink cold for up to 8 hours, with or without air conditioning. You can find drinkware like these in most travel centers.

Some of these tips may involve preparation on your end, but there’s no arguing the benefit they will have as you hit the road this summer!
