Truck Drivers Mental Health Importance

Truck drivers live a lifestyle that is not always conducive to good mental health. If the stress of making their delivery on time, dealing with bad drivers on the road, and lack of parking aren’t getting to them, the loneliness just might.

As an over-the-road trucker, regional driver, or local driver, it is crucial to take active steps to promote good mental health, especially knowing the risks. According to a recent study conducted by The United States National Library of Medicine, “truckers most frequently reported to suffer from loneliness, depression, chronic sleep disturbances, anxiety, and other emotional problems”. These mental health issues are prevalent in the trucker lifestyle and need to be prevented as much as possible.

One big issue, that you will find associated with most jobs, is stress. Truck drivers must worry about making their deliveries on time more than ever before. The pressure of getting there at the right time, makes unexpected traffic, inclement weather, and poor drivers even bigger stressors while on the road. Couple this with the worry of finding a parking spot, getting a good meal, and a decent night's sleep – who wouldn’t be stressed out?

How do you put an end to high stress? According to alltruckjobs.com, “stress can also be caused by lack of sleep, isolation and other health concerns that you might be suffering from. Stress can cause sleep deprivation, high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, and weight shifts, so it is important to manage and minimize your stress levels". There are many effective ways to help remove stress from your daily life, here are a few we suggest for truckers:

  • Make a good night's sleep a priority

  • Try meditation or deep breathing exercises

  • Do everything you can to be comfortable and content when on the road

  • Travel with a pet or significant other, when allowed

  • Contact home every day

  • Bring the comforts of home on the road

  • Make time for daily showers and self-care

  • Stop at friendly, well-kept truck stops

  • Cook meals in the cab

  • Live as close to a normal routine as possible

Over-the-road truckers are away from their families for weeks, even months at a time and that can take a toll. The important thing is to stay connected with loved ones and do what is necessary to take home with you on the road. Many truck drivers keep photos of family in the cab, along with their favorite blanket, playlists, and other comforting items.
