Connected in the Cab - What every driver needs to stay connected
March 7, 2018
Communication technology continues to evolve and one of the top industries that continues to utilize the very latest technology tools is trucking. Truckers are now more connected than ever before with devices that map their route, improve communication and keep them entertained during weeks or months on the road. We outlined some of the key components that every driver needs to keep them safe, comfortable and connected.
Navigation – While we do know some drivers that still utilize a printed road atlas- and we are not judging as they are still great for another source – having either a GPS unit or a factory installed navigation system that gives you real-time information and turn-by-turn directions is critical for any driver to do their job and be efficient. Yes, you can use your mobile phone as well – but if you don’t want to eat up your data and charge – invest in a decent navigation system.
Bluetooth Headset – Federal regulations ban hand held phones for CDL drivers so having a good quality headset with Bluetooth capability is a necessity. The ability to move freely around your truck and still be able to talk to a family member or a mechanic talking you through a fix on your truck is invaluable. Since this is an essential piece of equipment, buying one that is the best you can afford and that fits not only for comfort, but your needs will be key. Check out the new line from RoadKing that will be available in stores in April, they have some cool features and are comfortable.
Mobile or Smartphone – This is one of the top technologies that have changed the way truckers connect and we can’t imagine how to live without. It provides not only the ability to check in on you social media, send texts, emails, Facetime and makes calls to family, friends or business associates miles away – but is also a great tool for travel - with apps, music and more. And don’t forget about the camera which allows you to not only take photos while traveling but also can be used as a tool for your business by taking photos of documents that need to be sent electronically to places like the office or companies you are doing business with.
ELD – The electronic logging device systems allow truckers to eliminate paper logs and helps to make it easier and faster to accurately track, manage a share records of duty status data. While there has been a lot of controversy around the law including the mandate and hours of service – the device itself has many benefits as far as streamlining record keeping.
Entertainment – When you are parked for the night, all you need is a laptop or a tablet with an internet connection and maybe even a subscription to Netflix and you will have an unlimited supply of movies and TV shows as well as access to Facebook and more. You can also use either of them or an e-book reader such as a Kindle for downloading almost any book you want. Music can also be downloaded on any of these devices, and your phone too with services such as Pandora or Spotify.
Charging – Of course with all the electronics you have in your cab – make sure you have suitable charging cables for your devices. There are many that have a multiple charge features that also have Qualcomm® technology and Lightening® charging capabilities. MobileSpec and RoadKing have some great new charge and sync options you should check out.
Power – One of the must haves for every cab is a power inverter. Being able to not only have an ability to plug in all your electronics but also the microwave, coffee pot or a small fridge or other small appliances will make life on the road more like home.
CB Radio – Yes! A CB Radio! This piece of equipment in your cab could serve as a life-saver. You don’t always know the truck ahead or behind you and what better way to communicate with them then through your CB enabling you to warn of a road condition, accident or perhaps an issue with their truck. It is still an essential tool to keep you connected to other drivers, and while just a short time ago there was a lot of garbage on the radio – it has turned back into what it was meant for – a tool for safety used to communicate with other drivers on the road.
There are always new technologies coming down the road that will continue to make staying connected on the road easier and better than ever before. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.
