New Year, New Beginning

January 3, 2019

New Year, New Beginning

To many, a new year represents another opportunity to make changes in a positive direction. To do this, there must be an idea or a realization that there is something that you want to change. The most popular thinking on this subject is related to health in one way or another. These health goals can range from losing weight or trying to quit smoking. Changing old patterns to new ones can be quite a challenge under any circumstances but adding the unique lifestyle that a truck driver experiences it can be even more of a challenge.

Do you plan on starting the new year with a new beginning? Do you have a health-related goal? I have some tips to help you to succeed, so let’s get started!

Before you begin, you must establish a plan. This is the absolute most important factor in determining if you will have success or not.  Decide what you would like to improve upon and then write it down. Revisit the plan daily and make sure you are remaining on track. I like to put my thoughts and ideas on sticky notes and place them where I can see them on regular basis – in a truck this might be a perfect way to keep the elements of your plan visible and you on the way to meeting your goal.

Eliminate every distraction that might get you off track. If you want to stop smoking, don’t give yourself a crutch and keep a pack in your truck just in case. If your goal is weight loss, get rid of all the food and snacks that are not going to help you achieve your goals. Make it hard and inconvenient to go back to the old ways by not having those things that are keeping you from reaching your goal accessible. Stock your truck with healthy choices such as fresh vegetables and fruits.  Also make sure you have water on your truck, to not only keep you well hydrated but helping you to stay away from those drinks that are loaded with sugar.

While pulling into a grocery store that has plenty of healthy options is difficult with a truck, many travel centers are now offering a bigger selection of healthy options.  Some have sections with fresh produce, eggs, fruit and more.  Or pre-plan before you get on the road and pack your truck with healthy options. Also make sure to read your labels on anything pre-packaged that you purchase. There is a lot of hidden ingredients that could side track your plan.

Get an accountability partner to keep you on track, whether that be a friend, spouse or co-worker. There are many wonderful Facebook groups out there that will support you as well. Give it everything you have got and stick with your plan. You CAN do it! You ARE worth it!
